Week in Review/Scheduling/Today’s Workout/Eye Candy

Classes, in order of appearance

LIN493/503 – Sociolinguistics (Dr. Wolfgang Wölk): Simply put, I feel like I’m standing in the presence of greatness each class (which, in a way I am) and of course, just when I think I can’t be further enamored with him or his style of oration he starts talking about Conflict Theory Linguistics (‘not everyone’s language is really equal, and here’s what you need to know to make informed decisions so politicians who don’t know what they’re doing, don’t make bad choices’)…the man is just…amazing (and has a dirty, wicked, dry sense of humor). The class itself is wonderful and while we covered a lot of the same material in Paauw’s class, Wolfe provides us with his own novel material and, in doing so, keeps everyones attention.

After that, about 1/3 of the class walks with me to:

LIN301 – Structure of English Sound System (Dr. Karin Michaelson) is wonderful; The instructor has a bravado about her and an enthusiasm that just fills the room (…a room full of geeks…like, huge geeks…like, some of us may be considering getting a schwa tattoo somewhere in the near future, level of geekdom…) and really, she’s just always happy and relaxed and everyone feels comfortable in her class, so we all feel comfortable contributing to the discussion. Though that may also be a side effect of the fact that everyone but two people in the class already know each other (one of the benefits of being in a small department). When I walked into class the first day I was just like “the gangs all here…when do we start the roast?!”

After class most of us make a mass exodus down to LIN302…we’ve somehow managed to block schedule ourselves…miscreants that we are.

LIN302 – Structure of English Grammar (Dr. D. A. Zubin) is an interesting fellow; I can’t say I agree with his approach to linguistics or his mass generalizations (I find them counterproductive and I also find that when you say “we all speak like this” and just move on, that you then don’t take into account situations that may cause an environment for one to say something that speaker A may ‘always say’ but speaker B only says under certain conditions and speaker C may only say when referring to person A or B; so while they may ‘all say it’ that kind of reasoning doesn’t take into account why they ‘all say it’, or the situation surrounding the discourse and why the situations can be different and therefore they may ‘all say it’ but for different reasons…but I digress…).

I do recognize, however, that teaching styles differ and I don’t have to agree with him; I just have to learn his theories as one set that are out there. I also find myself cursing my 1980’s/1990’s Plainview, NY education (born in 1984, Nursery School in 1987, Kindergarten in 1989) because I grew up with “Whole English” which means I know absolutely nothing when it comes to grammar or syntax…my first exposure to grammar wasn’t English, it wasn’t Hebrew…no it was Arabic…so I should at least get something interesting out of the class because he does know his material, I just disagree with a few of his methods.

LIN421/501 – Linguistic Anthropology (Jürgen Bohnemeyer) is quite fascinating as a lecturer (he sounds like a German Kermit D. Frog, which of course keeps my attention because it combines my love of muppets with my love of people who have accents), the readings so far have been pretty abstract and require me to just sit down for a few hours after and turn the ideas over in my head until I can relate them to other previously learned concepts and then begin to understand them in greater details and apply them. Overall I’m enjoying the class though I’m curious to see other people’s perceptions of it at present.

ARI202 – Arabic IV (Issa Roustum) this is my last semester with Prof. Roustum because I don’t believe the Arabic International Studies Department (a subset of linguistics) will be getting the funding from The University required to have an Arabic V (which, it currently doesn’t have as a course). It looks like we’ll be doing a lot of translation work this semester and I’ll enjoy it, though I’m sad that I’m concluding my time with Prof. R. as a student this semester…he’s probably, by far, one of the most influential teachers I’ve ever had. He’ll be in Syria this Summer, and I hope that after University our paths will have reason to cross again. He’s an ambassador for his people and a truly remarkable man, I’ll be sad when I say goodbye to him at the end of the semester.

Next Semester

As far as Linguistics Courses that I need to take to complete my degree, I only have one more after this semester. Phonetics with Alice’s (maleficentseyes) Mom (who I also did my LIN420 – at least I think it was 420 – Independent Study with; she also directed the Teaching Internship I did). I’ll be taking her Phonetics Course, and hopefully TAing for another course so I can get some more TAing under my belt before I graduate. I met with her the other day and I was cleared to go to Israel this summer for two months, because the two courses I was going to take this summer I can take next fall which means this summer I’m a free man.

My course load in my final semester will be:
Phonetics
CSE111 (fulfills math)
The second half of Nutrition (science with lab)
TAing

And then…I get my degree…weird…very weird.

Scheduling

Scheduling is currently being shifted to take into account more time for reading, studying and report writing and adjusting pilates and yoga to their scheduled times on campus from the Wellness Center.

Today’s Workout

After I get a good eight hours of sleep I’ll be putting on the weighted training vest and heading to North Campus to make use of an empty university full of tons of classrooms with tons of stairs.

About to pass out…

Wow, what an amazing week; I’ll do a full entry tomorrow buuuut I wanted to say I’ll go through and comment on enteries tomorrow as well, I’ve been keeping up, I just haven’t had time to make comments (this first week was a whirlwind, an amazing whirlwind, but a whirlwind none the less)…

…okay, I hear me stuffed animals calling to me…and if I don’t answer, they leave really annoying and drawn out voice mail messages which means I’m off!

Holy Mother of Moses!

Class…was…nothing short of amazing.

I have, a shitload of work to do…and a quiz on Thursday…

…I also have a large entry to write, detailing all of the academic-y goodness that is this semester…and a ton of shopping that has to get done school supply and organization wise, so I don’t drown in data.

I got a call from my broker; my sell order has been placed…money for plane tickets soon…holy crap…can’t wait, so excited, about to go into academic glee/shock…

oh boy…oh boy…oh boy…I’ve missed writing papers…and I have a quiz on Thursday…thank God…I feel like a junkie, and I’ve been needing my fix.

…I also have to rework this whole making lunch the night before thing, because I have no breaks from 11am to 7pm…

I already have translation to do for Arabic…bwhahahahahahahahahahahaha……

Okay, I’m going to the foodstore now, and bopping in glee; then I’m going home and passing out, then tomorrow I have to revise my schedule (Pilates and Yoga have been moved, but in the long run, to more conveinent times).

…peace.

An Update as I Bogart Candie’s Desktop

So my Laptop will be back Wednesday, currently I’ve bogarted Candie’s (covarla) computer until she kicks me off, so I figured I’d do an update.

So, the past few days back have been wonderful; it’s been so good to see all of my friends (Alice, Jacqueline, Brigitte, The Syphrits, Teresa and everyone else I’ve gotten to hang out with these past few days) and just reconnect with everyone.

Today was spent hanging out with friends, catching up, and figuring out plans for the next couple of months. I managed to finish balancing the load on my X-Vest training vest so I now have the 84lb wonder loaded properly and I have to say, working out with it is fun, because after a two hour routine when you take it off, you just feel so much lighter, it’s very euphoric.

I emailed my broker and put in a sell order for $2,100.00; leaving 825.00 in the investment account. The tickets are $1,400.00 which leaves me with an extra $700.00 in my HSBC account (which will just sit there). So since Tomorrow is Sunday, and Monday is a Holiday the sell order will probably to go The Floor Wednesday, I’m assuming it won’t be in my account until at least three days after that, at which point I can book my tickets on El Al.

I’ve been using the Atlas that Alice (maleficentseyes) got me (I have no directional sense, I just have to walk something and remember the path and the landmarks to get anywhere) to plan my trip. There’s a lot of places I want to go, I want to spend at least three days at Yad Vashem, then one day after to just process the whole thing. I want to go to Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee because while they’re not important to my faith, they are important to a lot of my friends faith and I think it’d be worth it to see. I also really want to see the Salt Caves and Masada and spend a four or so days getting lost in Jerusalem. A few days to a week in Tel-Aviv (relaxing, partying, and checking out academic programs and getting contact information). I also want to go to Eilat for a bit and I want to go see where Shirah (stoicdaydreamer) is living now that she’s left UB and living in Israel, meet nir1) and of course say hi to Tova (who Shulamit will probably have spying on me, given that her biggest fear of me going to Tel Aviv is “He’ll see all of the hot men, have a wonderful time, be happy, and never come home again…this is awful” – God bless her).

This Coming Semester

There’s a lot that needs to be done, non-class wise; I need to not only create a resume but my CV as well, and while I have rough outlines of both I really need to edit them and update them; I’ve had a decent amount of teaching and ta-ing experience, but I need to quantify it and what I learned from it (‘managed class time well’, ‘learned how to not beat students’). I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to TA one last time in the Fall before I leave UB. I have to prepare what I’m going to talk about at YaoiNorth this summer as well and I really need to ‘professionalize’ my blog. I also have to meet with Dr. Jaeger so I can write the abstract for my paper and hopefully present it at Cornell later this year.

I have three exams that I need to sit for and a ton of paperwork that I need to put into better order, photocopy, and binderize so I have it right at hand (licenses, certifications, medical documents, vaccination sheets, etc.) and everything else that goes along with coming out of undergrad and entering the real world all while living out of a backpack. I’m also finishing up the recertification process for my CPhT and I’m half way through the CE hours that I need before March 31, 2008, however I’d really like to just bang out the rest so I don’t have to worry about it. I also have to finish registering for the bartender certification course…but it’ll all get done…because it hast to.

Course wise, I’m excited to start everything and get back into gear. I’m working towards getting all A’s this semester and I think it’s certainly feasible; I just have to stay on top of everything…and before I know it, grades will be in, I’ll be standing in front of 450 people in Toronto educating them on Gay Sex and then I’ll be on an Air Plane and landing in Tel Aviv.

Okay, time to vanish, I’ll be back when my laptop’s here, or when I’m on Campus Tuesday after all my classes.

Peace Homeslices.
