Life

Life right now is going really, really good; my apartment (after months) is finally fully setup; the bedroom looks gorgeous (wall hangings, antique furniture, lamps and all) my desk is finally the way I want it, my kitchen is wonderfully stocked both with food and appliances and life is grand…of course the only downside is that I’ll only be enjoying the apartment for two more years after this hard work but such is life.

Right now the only thing that’s an issue is figuring out how to loose weight; I’ve done it once and I’ve been keeping it off…but what’s turn into a constant theme is that I want to loose the last little bit, I try to…and it doesn’t work…which leads me to believe that I’ve now found around 120 ways to not loose weight (which, as a researcher and an academic, I view as a success)…now I need to find the way to loose weight and keep it off effectively.

School

School is going great; though I did make a mistake or two this year. I normally need some kind of regular feedback to feel good about what I’m doing academically and taking two independent studies where you get one grade at the end of the semester and one (of my two language courses) where there are only two exams really added a lot of stress this semester so I’ll have to keep that in mind for the future.

Learning the IPA with Dr. Jaeger was incredibly fun and I can’t wait to keep going with it; TAing Cyberporn & Society with Dr. Halavais was also an experience and one that I’m not soon to forget (it’s the reason I made TIME Magazine). Arabic with Prof. R is always amazing and I’m glad that Aaron (our Ninjew), Nadiah and Kevin will be taking the next level with me in the fall…and since most of us are here in the summer we can get a head start on studying. Hebrew was difficult this semester and I can pretty much pin-point the factors as to why which means that I’ll need to make adjustments when I take the next higher level in the fall (The class looks like it is going to be Heather, Two Other Students, Myself and the Professor…a small, small class indeed).

I believe I’ll be getting an A for each of my Independent Studies, a B+ for Arabic and a B- For Hebrew, but that’s speculation until Mid-Summer when the grades come out.

Just some thoughts

At first I was rather dismayed at the idea of staying at UB for another two years; but the other day (sponsored by a committee I sit on) I had the opportunity to give out 500 “Gay? Fine by me.” T-Shirts in our School Colors…of course the depressing thing about this was that we had a survey asking people how they identified themselves (straight, gay, bi, trans, male, female, other, etc) and pretty much every guy I found attractive…was straight; however it did allow me some time to think and reflect.

I’ve been at UB for four years now. In that time I’ve achieved multiple certifications, I’ve lost over 150lbs and kept it off, I have been in the Washington Post, Buffalo News, ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX local Affiliates and recently Time Magazine…I lost my virginity, I’ve dated, I’ve loved and been loved…and it’s been quite a ride (har har har, no pun intended =P) but if anything these next two years will let me just perfect everything. I’ll be able to correct the last few things I view as problems with how I do things; I’ll be able to finally figure out what “eating healthy” really means (not easy for someone who was on Ritalin, then on Risperidone, then on nothing); by 2008 (the year I’m graduating) my debt will be fully paid off to all of my creditors through In Charge debt solutions

So these two years before I move out of the country and create a new start really are there for a reason…to sort of sand down, and refine everything. And I look forward to that. Anyways, second to last IPA Session with Dr. Jaeger in a few hours; then I’m going home to clean up a little and get ready to study this weekend. Arabic & Hebrew Final Exams in 6 Days!

What a week! I have to say this week (screw that, this month) has been very stressful, but I’m leaving for Salem, MA in short order and relaxing…any and all problems can be dealt with when I return.

I’m about 99.99999% sure that I ACED my Arabic Mid Term, as far as school is going…well, it’s going. I really need to pull my act together with regards to statistics, if for some reason I fail it this semester I’ll move over to the Linguistics Department and be done with it, becuase I refuse to take this god forsaken course again (honestly…it’s evil, the bane of my existence…and it needs to die). I do languages, I don’t do math (and if you say ‘well math is a language’ well…screw you and the horse you rode in on it’s not a language I understand or plan on understanding anytime soon).

The IPA Independent Study is going really well (or, at least I think so…I’m sure Dr. Jaeger does too or she would have said something like “Matt you incompetent retard…how the hell did you get to Sweden!?). Dr. Jaeger (aka my Buffalo Mom and maleficentseyes IRL Mom) is a fantastic teacher…I don’t forsee any problem passing this class, it’s fun and I really enjoy it. We’ve completed English and she says we’ll be moving on to other languages now (yay!)…I’m no where near perfect at it yet, but I’ll get there. Hebrew is coming along, I missed the last class due to a migraine…somehow, I think I’ll still be able to pull an A- or B+ in the course and to give you a clue of how I’m doing in Arabic, two quotes from Prof. R:

Prof. R: “Matthew…I don’t mean to embarass you…but, people don’t laugh enough…and you make us laugh…which is good…sometimes you make us cry…but for the most part, you make us laugh…and I’m glad you are in my class…you should stick with it”

(This is Yesterday as he was giving us the instructions for our mid term):

Prof R: I want you to write the sentence in Arabic and then translate what you wrote into English (he looks at me) NOT HEBREW

Me: (In Hebrew) “Sorry Professor”

…so I think I’m getting a B+ or an A-

Anyways…Spring Break is upon us…and now, it is time for me to remember how to breathe.

Peace All.

The conversation that I had…well, more like a monologue, is enough explanation for what happend this morning

“There’s my Transcript”

“When did the incident happen?”

“THE Incident? Here is where I fell six feet into a cement floor, smashed in all of my teeth, lacarated my lip, injured my back and broke my nose…here is where my teacher failed me because I missed class three times for oral surgery despite the fact that I had a B in the class (because I need my teeth to eat and to speak) and she called me the elephant man…here is where one friend died, here another, and here another, and here another, and here another, here is where my grandfather died, here is where my father had a tumor in his knee, here is where my best friends mother attempted suicide, here is where the university administration villified me and tried to make the claim that I was a druggie and an alcoholic to save their own skin – if I sound angry, I assure you that I am not angry at you – but I am tired of this constant fight…while all of the above was going on I managed to pull a 2.6, obtain three certifications – two national, one state – lecture both nationally and internationally to crowds of no less than 400 people and I WILL NOT be at this university for another two years under this grey sky because of the mistakes of others. I WILL be graduating in June of 2007…and those two C’s in the Comm Department? I challenge anyone to take a course from Brian Reynolds back to back, get a higher grade than a C and NOT slit their wrists; I left claw marks of boredom on the desk…I NEED to take both Hebrew and Arabic 201 in the Fall and Hebrew and Arabic 202 in the Spring as well as the other required courses I need to graduate and I need those overrides and I WILL be graduating”

“I wanted to see if you’re serious about it, you are…they’re yours…just be careful”

“Thank you”

“Matt…”

“Yes?”

“I want to let you know…I believe you”

“Thank you.”

So in Hebrew class today we were talking about the

Bedouins and the teacher asks “so what do you all know

about them?” and one student goes “FOR A CAN OF SODA

THEY LET YOU RIDE A CAMEL IT’S SO COOL!!!” and I

really am just sort of curious as to HOW that came up

between my classmate and the camel’s owner…like,

walking through the desert…oh hey it’s the

Bedouins…I’ll give you a can of soda if you let me

ride your camel…

Our teacher also doesn’t know what a Hookah is which

everyone in the class found odd given UB’s favorite

extra curricular activity.

Anyways, I now need to head back home so I can keep

cleaning the apartment, shower, take a nap, outline my

notes for my stats exam tomorrow (hurrah for open

notebook tests!!), do transcription for IPA class and

get my Arabic homework in order for tonight.

I’ll read/comment/etc later on today.

much love
