It’s good to be known for something

So I started my new Linguistics class on Monday; the professor is very cool…the guest professor (who I think just comes to class out of boredom) is gorgeous and geeky and cool…and needs to be my new friend. Anyways, on Wednesday I managed (spaz that I am) to flip the top portion of my desk up not once, but twice sending my coffee table sized text book catapulting onto the sandal wearing feet of my colleague next to me; in the middle of class the girl on the other side just got up and left (we think it was typology that scared her away, rather than myself) so during the break the professor was like “And Matthew, you might want to use the desk next to you to, uh…hold your books” and I was like “great, he knows my first name not for my academic prowess, but because I’m by far the largest spaz in the entire class…whatever, I’m the only one in class who studied Sanskrit everyone else here takes those popular languages, like Spanish and French”

Speaking of Sanskrit, I think I’m almost at a level to resume learning it and I’m hoping Dr. Woodard will do an independent study with me; I do remember a good deal of the vocabulary and once I get the conjugation down, I should be okay. We’ll see, that’s a ‘Spring 07, I got my degree last semester, and now I have a few months to fool around and I don’t know what I’ll do with myself” kind of thing.

I still feel like shit; I keep having to send calls to voice mail because it hurts to talk and I still had three meetings today. I meet with Dr. C tomorrow at 11am where The Riot Act will be read and then prescriptions will be written…so sayeth the Gord (well, he would, if he were here).

I may be tabling for AEPi (since they’re short Brothers) I told Billy Baxter I want a T-Shirt for my troubles if I table for him. I think my position has been uped from honorary frat mom, to Casanova. In other news, one organization I work with on campus is giving me business cards…I think my title on them is “Mr. Fixit”

Eh, I didn’t mean for this post to be so melancholy, it’s just very annoying knowing I could be all fine and well if a bassackwards physicians assistant didn’t royally fuck up. I haven’t had a regular night’s sleep in quite a while and it’s been really annoying.

Grades in From Session J Course

Mood: happy-ish

So I received my grade for my Final Project (Project 3/3) and Final Exam in The Roots of English

Project 3/3: A- (Throughout the course never received below an A on a project…on my final project, there was a long entry which essentially we were just supposed to copy from the OED, I wasn’t feeling well that week…early onset of The Sinus Infection of Doom so I said “I would have printed the reference out for you, I didn’t hand write it in, I know how to find it” and Prof. L was like “that’s fine!” – I really love it when professors realize which of their assignments educate and expand the mind, and which ones are given as busy work).

Final Examination (of which there was only one examination, so it was both first and final): A- (I missed exactly ten points…and I know on what sections too; I knew which sections because as I filled out the answers in each of the sections I said to myself “I think Jews need a version of a Hail Mary…or anything better than The Shema…which indicates that I’m either just reaffirming my belief…or about to die…maybe something poetic like “Sweet Mother of Moses, Save us as we take this exam…or at least save us from our parents after they find out just how poorly we did on this exam, and please grant us that our Matzah Ball soup may come with more refills of Matzah Balls and less broth, and tell our Mothers, Grandmothers and Rebitzin to ease up on the guilt, forever and ever and ever, amen.” It’s the best I can do, I was stressed).

Putting that together with the fact that she counts the top 4 out of 5 Weekly Quiz Grades (one quiz I used as a “give me” since I was out one day that week with a migraine and then had a wedding) so my Quizzes were never less than a B (most of them were B- or B+)

Thus, I can conclude…my grade for the course is either A (the highest grade one can obtain at my university, we don’t have A+’s) or at the worst, an A-

I give myself both a gold star, and a cookie.

Today started Summer Session M and my “World Languages Course” and I walked into class going “i really wish I did laundry this week and didn’t put it off even though I’ve been feeling shitty, I don’t want the professor thinking I’m some kind of slacker” until I walk in and we’re both wearing almost exactly the same outfit:

semi-baggy shirts, matching jeans, matching Birkenstock sandals

…and I thought to myself:

“if this is any sign, from above, of what I’ll be doing in a few years I hope that I can a) keep the weight off as well as I’m doing now and b) that I have way more hair…otherwise, I hope to be JUST as incredibly geeky and cool, as this guy is.”

And now, time for a Fla-Vor-Ice, more reading, and sleep.

This post goes out to Alice, who since freshman year of college (when we met) has not only been my best friend and has consistently and with valor gone above and beyond the call of friendship duty (including, but not limited to calling me on my shit and bringing me soup when I fell out of bed), but who today crossed the quarantined gates of hell and entered my apartment to bring me not one, not two, but three bottles of soda, one giant box of fla-vor-ice and one bag of ice cubes…for her bravery in entering the plague ridden zone (I haven’t been able to move a lot for a few days and I’ve sweat now through 8 different sets of clothing, it’s bad) she is hereby awarded, this yellow heart:

This post also goes out to poor Dr. C (the Director of UB Medical) because when I’m feeling better, he’s going to be the one who has to deal with me as I read him (once again) the riot act regarding his staffs incompetence.
